ROUGE ON A MUD TURTLE · red cheeks
A Series of Laugh and Grow
Real animals, reimagined plump and cheerful — painted in lifelike detail, sculpted impossibly cute.
Chubby & Full of Character
Rounded, soft and undeniably cute — yet every scale, wrinkle and marking is hand-painted true to the real animal. The reaction it gets in person is always the same: so detailed, and so adorable.
Ready to Display
A single, sturdy hand-painted piece — no assembly, no fuss. Set it on a desk or shelf and it holds its happy pose, ready to collect and show off.
Some turtles hide their charm; this one wears it on its face. The red-cheeked mud turtle splashes vivid red and orange across its head and jaws, as if someone dabbed rouge on a mud turtle — a small, hardy character with an unexpectedly festive look.
Cheeks of Red
The bright red-orange markings on its face and neck are the source of its name and its charm, glowing against the darker shell. Breeding animals often flush even more vividly.
A Hinged Hideaway
Like other mud turtles it has hinges on its lower shell, letting it partly close itself into a protective box when threatened — a mobile shelter built right into its body.
From the Scorpion Group
It belongs to the widespread ‘scorpion’ mud turtle complex of Central and South America, named long ago for a small spine on the tail rather than any sting.
Little and Tough
Adaptable and hardy, it thrives in ponds and marshes from Mexico southward, walking the bottom in search of small prey — a plucky little turtle with a painted smile.
