A single, sturdy hand-painted piece — no assembly, no fuss. Set it on a desk or shelf and it holds its happy pose, ready to collect and show off.

Seen from the front, its shell rises into a steep tent with a sharp ridge along the peak — the ‘razor back’ that names it. A small, shy turtle of southern US waters, it would rather hide than fight, releasing a musky scent if a predator gets too curious.

The Razor Ridge

A prominent, sharp central keel runs the length of its steeply domed shell, giving young turtles an almost tent-like, ridged silhouette that softens beautifully into this rounded figure.

A True Stinkpot

Musk turtles earned the nickname ‘stinkpots’ for the musky odor they release when threatened — a chemical ‘keep away’ that works far better than their small size ever could.

A Walker, Not a Swimmer

Rather than paddle through open water, the razor-back prefers to stroll along the riverbed hunting snails, clams and insects, surfacing now and then for air.

Small and Secretive

Rarely straying far and happiest hidden among submerged roots, it is one of North America’s more secretive little turtles — here brought cheerfully into the open.

“A tent-roofed shell, a shy heart, and a scent that ends the conversation.”
