🏛️

On the shelf: Trophy Hall

Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.

🧲

Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian

Off the plaque, the bear’s wind-tousled coat and heavy, tufted ears bring a little of the high plateau to any magnetic surface.

On the roof of the world, where trees give up and the wind never quite stops, lives one of the least-seen bears on Earth. The Tibetan brown bear roams high, open country, and much of what we know about it comes from tracks, scat and the occasional lucky photograph.

Digging for Dinner

With few fish or berries at this altitude, the bear turns excavator. It digs pikas and marmots out of their burrows and fills in the rest of its menu with roots and tough mountain grasses.

The Yeti Connection

Stories of a great hairy creature in the Himalaya go back centuries. In 2017, scientists tested ‘yeti’ hair, bone and skin held in museums and private collections. Almost every sample turned out to be from a bear, several of them this one.

A Coat for the Cold

The long, shaggy fur you can see sculpted on this bust is built for bitter nights. Its dark coat, often with a paler collar around the neck and shoulders, gave it the old name ‘blue bear.’

Still a Mystery

Brown bears as a species are widespread, but this subspecies is known only from remote, thinly populated land. How many remain is still an open question.

“The bear behind the legend of the yeti.”
