🏛️

On the shelf: Trophy Hall

Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.

🧲

Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian

Off the plaque, those cream-and-black ‘spectacles’ make it the most distinctive face in the whole encyclopedia.

The Andean bear is the only bear in South America and the last living member of the short-faced bears, a family that once included some of the largest meat-eating mammals ever to walk North America. Today’s bear is a gentle plant-eater of the misty cloud forests.

No Two Faces Alike

The cream-colored rings and streaks around the eyes and across the chest are different on every bear. Researchers use them to recognize individual animals in camera-trap photos.

Nest in the Treetops

Andean bears climb high into fruiting trees and bend the branches into a rough platform, where they can eat and rest for days at a time, far above the forest floor.

A Taste for Tough Plants

Strong jaws and wide back teeth let this bear crack open bromeliads and palm hearts that few other animals can manage, with fruit, and only a little meat, filling in the rest.

The Bear from Darkest Peru

The beloved storybook bear from Peru has a real-life model: this species. Its true story is more serious. Farming and forest loss are breaking up its home, and it is listed as Vulnerable.

“The last short-faced bear on Earth, peering through its spectacles.”
