🏛️

On the shelf: Trophy Hall

Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.

🧲

Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian

Off the plaque, a round white face and black eye patches make the one fridge magnet everybody in the family will recognize.

The giant panda has the teeth and gut of a meat-eater and the appetite of a vegetarian. Almost everything it eats is bamboo, a poor food for a bear, so it spends much of the day sitting in the forest and chewing.

The Sixth Finger

Pandas have what looks like an extra thumb: an enlarged wrist bone that works like a finger, letting them hold a bamboo stalk and strip it with surprising skill.

Born Impossibly Small

A newborn panda weighs about as much as a stick of butter, roughly 1/900th of its mother’s weight. It starts out pink and hairless, and the black-and-white pattern appears over the first weeks.

Why the Round Face?

Those big cheeks aren’t just cute. Huge jaw muscles fill out the face, powerful enough to crush bamboo that would defeat most other animals.

A Rare Good-News Story

Decades of forest protection and breeding work raised the wild population to about 1,860 in the last national survey. In 2016 the IUCN moved the species from Endangered to Vulnerable.

“A bear that gave up meat, and won the whole world over.”
