IUCN · LEAST CONCERN · one of Africa’s ‘Big Five’
One Statue. Two Habitats.
The head attaches to the plaque with a hidden magnet — lift it off whenever you like.
On the shelf: Trophy Hall
Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.
Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian
Removed from its plaque, the heavy-browed head keeps its imposing presence on any magnetic surface — a Big Five portrait in miniature.
At first glance it resembles cattle. It is nothing of the sort. The African buffalo has never been domesticated in thousands of years of human contact — a testament to its strength, independence and formidable defensive instincts. Within Vol.2, it holds special status as the ‘secret’ chase figure: the one collectors search for.
Respected Across the Savanna
The African buffalo is counted among Africa’s ‘Big Five’ — the continent’s most formidable large animals. Field researchers document herds actively defending their members, driving off lion prides, and rescuing calves from predators. Few herbivores command this level of respect from Africa’s apex hunters.
The Boss
Note how the horn bases fuse into a single armored shield across the forehead. That plate is formally called the ‘boss’ — dense enough to absorb impacts that would fell most animals. It functions as built-in armor, and it is faithfully reproduced on this bust.
Herd Democracy
African buffalo appear to ‘vote’: when it is time to move, individuals stand, orient their gaze in a direction, and lie back down. The herd then travels roughly where the majority were looking — one of the animal kingdom’s most striking examples of collective decision-making.
The Collector’s Quarry
In Vol.2, the African buffalo is the special ‘secret’ figure — the hidden chase of the series. A fitting role for an animal that has never been tamed. If this one has reached your shelf, it earned the journey.
