IUCN · VULNERABLE · the ‘silent extinction’
One Statue. Two Habitats.
The head attaches to the plaque with a hidden magnet — lift it off whenever you like.
On the shelf: Trophy Hall
Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.
Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian
Lifted free of the plaque, the long-necked profile becomes a graceful accent on any magnetic surface — the tallest animal on Earth, at hand height.
It’s the tallest animal that has ever walked the Earth, visible from a mile off — and yet the giraffe is vanishing so quietly that scientists call it the ‘silent extinction.’ There are now fewer giraffes in Africa than elephants, and most people have no idea.
Seven Bones, Same as Yours
A giraffe’s towering neck contains exactly seven vertebrae — the same number as in your neck, and a mouse’s. Each one is just enormously stretched, up to ten inches long. Evolution didn’t add bones; it super-sized the ones already there.
A Tongue With a Plan
That 18-to-21-inch tongue is prehensile and colored blue-black — believed to be built-in sunscreen for a body part that spends all day out in the open, stripping leaves from between acacia thorns.
A Heart Under Pressure
To pump blood all the way up to a brain two stories high, a giraffe needs blood pressure roughly twice yours and a heart to match. Special valves in its neck keep it from blacking out every time it lifts its head from a drink.
The Silent Extinction
Giraffe numbers have fallen sharply in recent decades while the world looked elsewhere. Now listed as Vulnerable, the world’s tallest animal is a quiet reminder that a species doesn’t have to be a tiger to be in trouble.
