Crest and Dewlap

A row of soft spines runs down its back and a large flap of skin — the dewlap — hangs beneath its chin. The dewlap helps it signal to rivals and soak up warmth, and gives the iguana its unmistakable profile.

A Leaf-Eating Giant

Despite its dragon looks, the green iguana is almost entirely vegetarian, grazing on leaves, flowers and fruit high in the trees — a gentle giant of the canopy.

The Third Eye

Like many lizards it has a pale ‘parietal eye’ on top of its head that senses light and shadow, helping it detect the swoop of a predator from above.

Diver and Swimmer

When danger strikes it will leap from the canopy, and it swims powerfully with its flattened tail — a surprising talent for such a tree-loving lizard.
