Unlike its forest-dwelling cousins, the ornate box turtle lives out on the open grasslands and prairies of the central US, sheltering in burrows from the heat and cold.

Each segment of its shell carries bold yellow lines radiating outward on a dark background — the striking ‘ornate’ pattern that names it and makes it one of the most handsome box turtles.

An Insect Lover

More carnivorous than many box turtles, it eats large numbers of insects, following grazing herds to snap up the bugs they stir from the grass.
