Ready to Display

A single, sturdy hand-painted piece — no assembly, no fuss. Set it on a desk or shelf and it holds its happy pose, ready to collect and show off.

Named for the three toes on each of its hind feet, the three-toed box turtle is a gentle, mild-colored box turtle of the central United States — often plainer than its eastern cousins, but with males sporting handsome splashes of orange and red on the head.

Count the Toes

Most box turtles have four hind toes; this one usually has three, the quirk that gives it its name — a small feature that sets it neatly apart.

A Subtle Beauty

Its shell tends toward plain olive-tan, but breeding males often develop bright orange and red markings on the head and forelegs, a splash of color on a modest turtle.

A Closing Shell

Like all box turtles it can seal itself inside its hinged shell, safe from predators — a gentle homebody with a built-in shelter.

A Beloved Native

One of the most commonly encountered box turtles across the central states, the three-toed is a familiar and cherished woodland native — here rounded into a plump figure.

“Three toes, a modest coat, and a lifetime spent close to home.”
