Streaked with bright yellow lines that radiate across a dark, high-domed shell, the Florida box turtle is one of the most handsome of the American box turtles — and, like all of them, it can fold up and seal itself completely inside its own shell.

A Shell That Closes

A hinge across the lower shell lets the box turtle pull it up tight against the top, sealing itself inside like a living box — a mobile fortress few predators can crack.

Its dark shell is decorated with fine yellow lines radiating outward, and two bright stripes run along its head — a bright, distinctive look among the box turtles.
