Its body is sheathed in ganoid scales — hard, enamel-coated, interlocking plates so tough that early settlers used gar hide as protective covering. This is a fish that wears a suit of armor.

Using a specialized swim bladder as a primitive lung, the alligator gar can gulp air at the surface and survive in warm, stagnant water where other big fish would suffocate — another trick from its ancient toolkit.
