On the shelf: Trophy Hall

Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.

Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian

Removed from the plaque, the wildebeest’s curved horns and long, solemn face bring the Great Migration to any magnetic surface.

Every year, roughly a million and a half blue wildebeest walk a great loop through Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara, following the rains to fresh grass. It is the largest overland migration of mammals on Earth, and the wildebeest is its star.

Following the Rain

The herds travel hundreds of miles in a year, sensing distant storms and the new grass they bring. Hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles travel with them; meet the Zebra in Vol.3.

Born Ready

Most calves arrive in the same two or three weeks, so many are born at once that predators cannot take them all. A newborn stands within minutes and can keep up with the herd within a day or two.

Blue in the Right Light

The ‘blue’ comes from a silvery, blue-grey sheen to the coat, crossed by dark vertical stripes on the neck and shoulders — the reason for its other name, the brindled gnu.

The River Crossings

The most famous moments of the migration are the crossings of the Mara River, where thousands of animals plunge in at once. It is one of the great wildlife spectacles of the world.

“One animal, a million and a half times over, following the rain.”
