🏛️

On the shelf: Trophy Hall

Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.

🧲

Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian

Off the plaque, the ram’s great spiral horns make a bold, sculptural silhouette on any magnetic surface.

A mature bighorn ram carries horns that can weigh as much as all the other bones in its body. It uses them in some of the loudest contests in nature: two rams rearing up and crashing together head-on, with a crack that echoes across the canyon.

The Collision

Rams charge at about 20 miles per hour and meet horn to horn. A double layer of bone in the skull and a thick, strong neck absorb the shock, and the contest may go on for hours.

Rings Like a Tree

Bighorn horns are never shed. They grow a little each year, leaving rings on the curl that can be counted, much like the rings of a tree, to estimate a ram’s age.

Grip of a Climber

Each hoof has a hard outer rim and a soft, rubbery inner pad that grips rock. Bighorns cross ledges only a few inches wide, staying out of reach of wolves and mountain lions.

A Comeback in the Mountains

Hunting and diseases caught from domestic sheep once wiped bighorns out across much of the West. Careful reintroductions have returned them to many mountain ranges, though disease is still a threat.

“Every curl of horn is another year survived on the edge of a cliff.”
