On the shelf: Trophy Hall

Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.

Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian

Detached from its plaque, the golden cat’s warm-toned, patterned face makes a rich accent on any magnetic surface.

Few people ever see an Asiatic golden cat. Secretive, forest-dwelling, and cloaked in a coat that ranges from burnished gold to grey to solid black, it is one of Asia’s least-understood wild cats — known in some cultures simply as the ‘fire cat.’

A Coat of Many Colors

This single species appears in an extraordinary range of colors — golden, cinnamon, grey, even solid black. Constant across them all are the white-bordered stripes on the cheeks and brow, the markings this sculpt reproduces so precisely.

The Fire Cat

Folklore across its range treats the golden cat with reverence. Some hill peoples believed that burning its fur would drive tigers away, or that carrying a single hair offered protection on the trail — the kind of legend that grows around an animal almost never seen.

A Forest Ghost

Most of what we know comes from camera traps. Ranging from the Himalayan foothills to the rainforests of Sumatra, it hunts birds, rodents and small deer across a huge territory, yet remains one of the least-studied cats in Asia.

Quietly at Risk

As Southeast Asia’s forests are cleared, the golden cat is now Near Threatened — a species we are at risk of losing before we have truly come to know it.

“A cat of many colors, and even more mystery.”
