Built for the Cold

It is the largest of all tigers, and every feature is an answer to winter: a deep layer of fat, the thickest, longest coat of any tiger, and a paler, less heavily striped hide that blends into snow and bare taiga. Larger bodies also lose heat more slowly — size itself is insulation.

A Kingdom of Snow

Across the Russian Far East, prey is thin and widely spread, so a single Siberian tiger may patrol a territory of hundreds of square miles — among the largest home ranges of any cat. It is a solitary sovereign of an immense, quiet realm.

Back from the Brink

By the 1940s hunting had driven the subspecies down to roughly forty animals. Russia responded by becoming the first nation to grant the tiger full protection, and the population has since recovered to around five hundred — one of conservation’s hard-won successes.
