Most of the time it’s a slim, unassuming tree lizard — until it’s threatened. Then the frilled lizard snaps open an enormous ruff of skin around its neck like a startling umbrella, gapes its mouth, hisses, and if that fails, bolts away upright on its hind legs.

The Frill

A large fold of skin around its neck, normally lying flat, springs open into a wide, colorful disc when the lizard is alarmed — making it look far bigger and more dangerous than it is.

A Two-Legged Sprint

If bluffing fails, the frilled lizard turns and runs on its hind legs alone, frill flapping, in a comical but effective dash for the nearest tree.

The whole dramatic display is pure bluff — a harmless insect- and small-prey eater making itself look terrifying to buy time to escape.
