Named for the titan who held up the heavens, the Atlas beetle lives up to the legend. Males grow three tremendous curved horns — two from the thorax, one from the head — and use them like grappling arms in slow, powerful duels high in the rainforest.

The male’s trio of long, curved horns is used to grip, lever and toss rival males off branches in contests over feeding sites and mates — a clash of living tanks.
