🏛️

On the shelf: Trophy Hall

Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.

🧲

Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian

Off the plaque, its small, worried-looking face and golden muzzle are impossible to walk past without smiling.

The sun bear is the smallest bear on Earth, about half the size of an American black bear, and it has the longest tongue of them all. It is built for life in tropical forest, climbing high into the trees and licking honey and insects out of places no other bear can reach.

The Tongue Is the Tool

A tongue up to ten inches long reaches deep into bee nests and termite tunnels. Long, curved claws rip open the wood first, and the tongue does the rest.

A Rising Sun on the Chest

The golden crescent on its chest gave the bear its name, and no two patches are quite alike. In the Malay language it is called beruang madu, the honey bear.

Mistaken for a Person

Sun bears often stand up on their hind legs, and they do it so naturally that in 2023 a zoo in China had to reassure visitors that its bear wasn’t a person in a costume.

Forest Gardener

Sun bears open up rotting logs and spread fruit seeds as they feed, helping the forest renew itself. Logging and poaching are shrinking their home, and the species is listed as Vulnerable.

“The smallest bear in the world, with the longest tongue.”
