Perhaps the most famous frog in the world, the red-eyed tree frog sleeps by day tucked green-on-green against a leaf, all its color hidden. Disturbed, it snaps open enormous scarlet eyes and flashes blue-and-orange flanks — a burst of color meant to freeze a predator just long enough to escape.

A Flash to Startle

When threatened, it suddenly opens its huge red eyes and reveals bright blue-and-orange sides — a split-second shock of color, called a startle display, that buys the frog time to leap away.

Hidden by Day

At rest it folds its colorful legs and flanks out of sight and closes its eyes, becoming a plain green leaf-shape — perfect camouflage until it needs to vanish in a flash of color.

Sticky-Toed Acrobat

Large adhesive toe pads let it climb and cling among the rainforest canopy, where it hunts insects by night high above the forest floor.
