The box turtle earns its name from a remarkable trick: a hinge across its lower shell lets it fold up and seal itself completely inside, like a living box with the lid shut. This is the mainland Chinese form of the yellow-margined box turtle, marked with warm yellow edges and a bright head stripe.

A Shell That Closes

A flexible hinge across the plastron lets the box turtle pull its lower shell up tight against the top, sealing itself inside — a mobile fortress that few predators can crack.

Yellow Around the Edges

Bright yellow margins run along the shell and a bold yellow stripe crosses the crown of the head, giving this species its name and its handsome look.

A Forest-Floor Forager

It ambles through damp woodland and rice paddies eating snails, worms, insects and fallen fruit — a gentle omnivore of the Asian countryside.
