Some turtles were treasured before science even knew they existed. McCord’s box turtle first reached researchers through the animal trade and was only formally described in 1988 — and almost immediately recognized as one of the rarest and most threatened turtles in the world.

A Late Discovery

Unknown to science until 1988, McCord’s box turtle came to light through the very trade that now threatens it — a species we barely met before it was in danger.

A Tiny Home Range

It is known only from a small area of Guangxi in southern China, a pinpoint distribution that makes it extraordinarily vulnerable to collection and habitat loss.

Warm and Elongated

Its smooth, elongated shell glows in warm orange-brown tones, and a hinged plastron lets it close up like all its box-turtle kin — beauty and function in one.

Critically Endangered

Prized by collectors and stripped from the wild, McCord’s box turtle now survives largely thanks to careful captive breeding — a living rarity, honored here in plump form.
