THE DINOSAUR EEL · air-breather
A Series of Laugh and Grow
Real animals, reimagined plump and cheerful — painted in lifelike detail, sculpted impossibly cute.
Chubby & Full of Character
Rounded, soft and undeniably cute — yet every scale, wrinkle and marking is hand-painted true to the real animal. The reaction it gets in person is always the same: so detailed, and so adorable.
Ready to Display
A single, sturdy hand-painted piece — no assembly, no fuss. Set it on a desk or shelf and it holds its happy pose, ready to collect and show off.
With its long body, armored scales and a saw-tooth row of little finlets down its back, the saddled bichir looks like it swam straight out of the fossil record — which, more or less, it did. Nicknamed the ‘dinosaur eel,’ it even breathes air with real lungs.
Built Like a Fossil
Bichirs are among the most ancient of the ray-finned fishes, and their armored bodies and flag-like dorsal finlets give them a distinctly prehistoric, reptilian look.
It Breathes With Lungs
Unusually for a fish, the bichir has a pair of primitive lungs and must gulp air at the surface, letting it survive in stagnant water and even wriggle over damp ground for short distances.
A Patient Night Hunter
Poor-sighted but keen-nosed, the saddled bichir prowls muddy shallows after dark, sniffing out and ambushing fish, frogs and crustaceans.
The Saddle Pattern
Dark saddle-like bars across its back give this species its name, breaking up its outline against a weedy riverbed — a pattern this plump figure shows off nicely.
