White for the Snow
Its dense white plumage camouflages it against Arctic snow and insulates it against brutal cold. Males grow whiter with age, while females and young keep more dark barring.
The Lemming Connection
Snowy owls feed heavily on small mammals like lemmings, and in years when prey is scarce they wander far south — which is why one occasionally turns up startlingly far from the Arctic.
