On the shelf: Trophy Hall

Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.

🧲

Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian

Off the plaque, the silverback’s deep-browed, thoughtful face is the most commanding presence you can put on a fridge.

High on the misty volcano slopes where Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo meet, mountain gorillas live in close family groups. At the center of each one is a silverback, a mature male named for the saddle of silver hair across his back.

The Silverback

As males mature, at around twelve years old, the hair on their backs turns silver. The silverback leads the group, settles disputes, decides where it travels and stands between his family and any threat.

Dressed for the Cold

Mountain gorillas live at altitudes where nights can drop close to freezing, and their fur is longer and thicker than that of their lowland relatives — the dense coat you can see sculpted on this bust.

A Nose Like a Fingerprint

Researchers tell individual gorillas apart by their nose-prints: the shape of the nostrils and the wrinkles above them are different on every animal.

A Rare Recovery

After falling to only a few hundred in the 1980s, mountain gorillas have grown to just over a thousand thanks to strict protection, ranger patrols and carefully managed tourism. In 2018 the subspecies was moved from Critically Endangered to Endangered.

“A gentle giant, and one of conservation’s rare good-news stories.”
