🏛️

On the shelf: Trophy Hall

Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.

🧲

Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian

Off the plaque, the warthog’s curling tusks and rugged face are pure character on any magnetic surface.

The common warthog will never win a beauty contest, and it does not need to. Every feature on that rugged face has a job, from the tusks that dig and defend to the ‘warts’ that shield the eyes in a shoving match.

The Warts Aren’t Warts

Those bumps are thick pads of skin and gristle. When males clash head to head, the pads protect the face and eyes. Males carry larger ones than females.

On Its Knees

Warthogs often graze kneeling, resting on thick calluses on their front wrists. It lets them reach the short grass and roots they love without bending awkward legs.

Back Door Entry

They sleep and raise their young in old aardvark burrows, and they reverse in tail first, so the tusks face anyone who follows.

Tail Up, Running

A fleeing warthog trots off with its thin tail held straight up like a radio antenna, which may help the family keep track of one another in tall grass.

“Not pretty, not sorry — and perfectly built for the savanna.”
