One Statue. Two Habitats.
The head attaches to the plaque with a hidden magnet — lift it off whenever you like.
On the shelf: Trophy Hall
Mounted on its wood-grain shield plaque with a brass-style nameplate, it reads like a natural-history-museum exhibit — shrunk to the size of your palm.
Off the plaque: Fridge Guardian
Off the plaque, the broad, square-lipped head of the world’s largest rhino turns any magnetic surface into a quiet patch of savanna.
The white rhinoceros is the largest of the five living rhino species and, after the elephants, one of the heaviest animals on land. Despite the name it is not white at all — it is the same slate grey as its relatives, and its gentle grazing life could hardly be further from its formidable look.
A Lawnmower Mouth
Its wide, square upper lip is built for cropping short grass, and the white rhino spends much of its day grazing with its head held low. Compare it with the hooked, finger-like lip of the black rhinoceros in Vol.2 — one rhino mows, the other plucks leaves.
What’s in a Name
No one is entirely sure why it is called ‘white.’ A popular — though debated — story says early settlers mistook the Afrikaans wyd, ‘wide,’ describing that broad mouth. Whatever the origin, the name stuck.
Horn of Hair
A rhino’s horn is not bone. It is compacted keratin, the same protein as human hair and fingernails, and it grows back throughout the animal’s life. That simple fact makes the poaching that targets it all the more tragic.
A Rescue Story — and a Warning
By the end of the 1800s the southern white rhino had been hunted down to perhaps fewer than one hundred animals in a single South African reserve. Decades of protection rebuilt it into the most numerous rhino on Earth. Its northern cousin was not so lucky: only two females remain, both in a Kenyan conservancy.
