Series 7 saves its most formidable minibeast for last. The Asian giant hornet is the largest hornet in the world — a two-inch aerial hunter with a fearsome reputation, given the dramatic media nickname ‘murder hornet.’ Here, at least, it is entirely huggable.

The World’s Largest Hornet

At up to two inches long with a three-inch wingspan, Vespa mandarinia dwarfs ordinary wasps and hornets. Its size alone makes it one of the most imposing insects in the sky.

The Bee-Hunter

A small group of these hornets can raid a honeybee hive, and their pursuit of bees is one reason they draw such attention. In their native range, some bees have even evolved a remarkable heat-based defense against them.

More Feared Than Fatal

Despite the ‘murder hornet’ headlines, the species mostly avoids people and stings defensively. Its true role is as a top insect predator in the forests of East Asia.

The Collector’s Prize

As the secret chase of the series, the giant hornet is the piece keepers hunt for — the most fearsome bug in the set, rendered friendly, round and safe to keep on a shelf.

“The most feared insect in the sky — finally one you can safely hold.”
