It carries a natural resistance to rattlesnake venom, so a defensive bite from its prey does little to stop it. Where kingsnakes patrol, rattlesnakes keep their distance.

The California kingsnake has no venom of its own. It is a muscular constrictor, coiling around prey and tightening with each breath until it can swallow it whole.
