As someone who has followed the Frame Arms (骨裝機兵) series since its inception, there’s always a special kind of anticipation when Kotobukiya reveals a new entry, especially one carrying the legacy of the original Gourai. This new announcement, the Type 70 Model 1 Gourai 2 (七〇式一型 轟雷2), immediately caught my eye.

It is an absolute pleasure to see mechanical designer Yukinori Yanase (柳瀨敬之) lending his vision to this next-generation design. The Gourai has always been synonymous with heavy armor and robust presence, elements that Yanase-san clearly channeled here. Looking at the prototypes, the commitment to detail is palpable. This isn’t just a repaint; it appears to be built from entirely new molds, capturing the heavy, dense texture you expect from high-caliber military hardware.

Design Integrity and Transformation

What elevates this kit for me is the functional design. The incorporation of elements suggesting heavy artillery, a saber stored in a sheath, and specialized shield gauntlets implies a well-thought-out combat role. Crucially, the ability to transform into a tank mode—a signature feature of the Gourai lineage—is maintained. The text mentions that the turret in tank mode can achieve that specific, angled articulation, often called the ‘lunch angle’ in enthusiast circles, simulating armor deflection. This attention to mechanical realism is what makes the Frame Arms line so compelling.

The 1/100 scale (approximately 200mm tall) allows for impressive surface detail on the armor panels and track components. The use of multiple injection colors to represent the complex livery suggests a high level of finish straight off the runner, which is always appreciated.
