Man, I am literally staring at these promo shots with my mouth wide open. I thought I had seen every possible version of the Barbatos, but Bandai just proved me wrong. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, they’ve revealed the HG 1/144 Gundam Barbatos Adapt from the new short animation Interlude of the Wedge (Makkan no Kusabi). Honestly, the level of refinement they are putting into this High Grade kit is just… wow.

Look, for those who aren’t caught up on the deep lore, the Gundam Barbatos Adapt (also known as the Modified Type) is the interim form between the battered 6th Form we saw at the end of Season 1 and the iconic Lupus. It’s that raw, ‘held together by duct tape and prayers’ vibe that makes IBO designs so legendary. The story goes that after the brutal battle in Edmonton, the Tekkadan engineers had to patch him up with limited resources. They even had to swap the signature mace for a Tachi (Katana) because the frame was too worn out to swing heavy blunt weapons. That is some top-tier world-building right there.

But what really has me shaking is the mechanical update. This isn’t just a simple repaint or a few new armor bits. Bandai is actually going back and re-engineering the Gundam Frame! They’ve added a new movable axis in the neck, totally revamped the shoulder and abdomen structures for better posing, and—get this—they’ve replaced the old polycaps with KPS material. If you’re a builder, you know that means the joints are going to stay tight and durable for way longer.

I’m already imagining the poses I can pull off with those new hip swing mechanisms. The set comes with two sizes of Tachi that can be mounted right onto the waist thrusters. The thought of waiting until May 2026 to get this on my workbench is actually painful. The anticipation is going to be the death of me, but seeing this much love given to a 1/144 scale kit makes it all worth it.

Everything from the asymmetrical battle-damage repairs to the new full-color box art looks absolutely pristine. It’s a Premium Bandai exclusive, which means I need to be ready the second pre-orders open. My display shelf is already screaming for this guy to take center stage. Honestly, the IBO line just keeps on giving even a decade later.
