S.H.MonsterArts Rathalos for Monster Hunter’s 20th anniversary.
Tamashii Nations, a part of Bandai Spirits Company in Japan, is well-known for its S.H. MonsterArts collection, a series that ingeniously merges intricate creature modeling with exemplary mobility. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the much-loved video game franchise, Monster Hunter, they unveiled today their latest product: “S.H.MonsterArts Rathalos – 20th Anniversary Edition-” scheduled to be released in August 2024.
Rathalos, a creature more than 17 meters long, is the most iconic monster in the Monster Hunter series. Wreathed in a red shell and possessing large, mighty wings, Rathalos can rapidly fly, making it prevalently known as the ‘King of the Skies.’ It’s not just its fierce temperament that scares off opponents, but its noteworthy combat abilities, including its unique organ known as the ‘flame sac,’ which allows it to spew a scorching blaze, reducing anything in its path to ashes.
The model, redesigned from the 2020 version, meticulously replicates the Rathalos’s crimson scales, sharp spikes, and distinct wing patterns, staying truthful to the creature’s vivid portrayal in the game. The figurine’s excellent mobility is thanks to well-crafted instrumental engineering that included numerous moving parts such as the lower jaw, neck, wings, legs, and tail, all without destroying the overall aesthetics. This versatility extends to its wings, which can be spot-on juxtaposed between two postures—folded and spread, to recreate a formidable wingspan of up to 40 cm.
Fans might remember the ‘flame breath effect’ in the earlier version, which merely depicted a streak of flame from the mouth during its fury. However, this 20th-anniversary edition gets upgraded with a more striking ‘fireball effect.’ This stunning detail makes it extraordinarily striking when displayed. Besides, an exclusive clear stand was redesigned and now adorned with the 20th-anniversary Monster Hunter logo.
The S.H.MonsterArts Rathalos—20th Anniversary Edition—costs 19,800 Japanese yen (tax included) and is expected to hit the shelves in August 2024. When folded, the PVC and ABS figurine spans about 300mm wide and measures approximately 400mm when spread. So gear up Monster Hunter enthusiasts, the king of the sky awaits your collection!
