Bandai Spirits Reveals ‘RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0’ with Advanced Features
Through its HOBBY division, Bandai Spirits has announced the release of the “RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0,” scheduled for August 2024. This model, priced at 3,850 JPY (approximately $29 USD), brings a fresh perspective to the “RG (Real Grade)” series by integrating armor, a skeleton framework, and interactive armor with new technology. 14 years after the release of the old version, this new model abandons the one-piece molded skeleton “Advanced MS Joint” in favor of the design concept from the popular 1/60 scale “PG UNLEASHED 1/60 RX-78-2 Gundam.”
The “RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0” features a semi-monocoque body structure similar to the PGU version, with a movable skeleton, trusses, and layered external armor. The model achieves an ultra-high precision internal structure through advanced part division and color separation. The overall exterior armor is crafted with Bandai’s latest technology, showcasing intricate details and an internal structure engraving even in unseen areas like parts junctions.
The head’s complex colors are precisely divided, including the forehead’s primary camera, twin-eye cameras, Vulcan guns, cheek vents, red eyes, and chin. The armor components also present a seamless, integrated design without visible part clasps, as seen in recent kits like the “Hi-ν Gundam.”
The mobility design echoes the PGU version with a visible, realistic mechanical structure. Parts like the thighs have an interactive structure that slides with joint bending, while the front of the lower leg has an independent moving design, allowing for more natural and fluid motion. The core fighter is incorporated within the abdominal section, featuring a newly developed auxiliary joint mechanism for flexible movement, and can separate and transform into a fighter.
