There are certain mecha designs that just resonate deeply, and the VF-25 Messiah Valkyrie from Macross Frontier certainly sits high on that list. When I saw the announcement for the HG (High Grade) 1/100 scale assembly model of the VF-25G Messiah Valkyrie (Mihai B. Brown Custom), I felt that familiar jolt—this is precisely the kind of detailed snapshot of the series I appreciate seeing realized in plastic.

This specific variant belongs to Mihai B. Brown, a vital comrade to the protagonist Saotome Alto within the S.M.S Skull Leader Squadron. The kit appears to be skillfully adapted from the upcoming Alto unit, incorporating new tooling to capture Mihai’s distinctive head sculpt and that gorgeous blue and white livery.

The most compelling engineering detail, in my opinion, centers around the specialized sniper rifle. The ability to swap parts and utilize a guide wire to pose the weapon with its eight stabilizing fins deployed, simulating the stabilization required for long-range targeting, speaks volumes about the attention paid to the mechanical function of this variant.

As expected for a High Grade kit, the core functionality—the Simplified Three-Stage Transformation (FIGHTER, GERWALK, BATTROID)—is retained via part swapping. Even in the BATTROID mode, the articulation seems engineered for dynamic posing, thanks to features like the pull-out shoulder joints and three-axis chest movement. Displaying it alongside its FOLD Speaker pods and shield would be the ideal way to appreciate the craftsmanship.

For the static display purists, the attention to detail in FIGHTER mode is commendable. Features include deployable landing gear and cockpit canopy opening to house the included mini-pilot figure. I’m also intrigued by the use of the multi-layered color-correcting decals applied on PET film; these usually provide a superior, vibrant look compared to standard stickers for insignia.

It’s worth noting the bifurcation of the release: the standard kit versus the DX Version. For collectors who appreciate the ancillary artistic elements that ground the machine in its narrative universe, the DX package is tempting. It includes new artwork by Risa Ebata (the character designer for Macross F) in the form of a double-sided acrylic standee featuring Ranka Lee, plus Ranka water-slide decals incorporating iconic poses from her song, “Seikan Hikou.”
