FINAL FANTASY Nendoroid Warrior of Light Brings Yoshitaka Amano’s Cover Art to Chibi Scale

Good Smile Company shrinks Yoshitaka Amano's original FINAL FANTASY box art hero into a 10 cm Nendoroid with a metallic sword, swappable faces and a poseable cape.

The Nendoroid Warrior of Light (ねんどろいど 光の戦士) is a new Nendoroid from Good Smile Company based on SQUARE ENIX’s FINAL FANTASY. It’s scheduled for September 2026 at 7,900 yen (appx. $52). The source is Yoshitaka Amano’s painting of the hero from the original game’s cover. That’s a bold pick.

The Nendoroid Warrior of Light is a painted, articulated PVC figure about 10 cm (appx. 3.9 in) tall, made by Good Smile Company. Its release is scheduled for September 2026. The price is 7,900 yen (appx. $52) including tax.

Amano’s Brushwork, Translated Into Plastic

Amano never painted clean armor. His Warrior of Light is a storm of red, blue and yellow patches that bleed into each other, closer to stained glass than plate mail. Sculptor 七兵衛 of 松田Model (Matsuda Model) had to turn those loose watercolor shapes into hard edges a Nendoroid body can carry. The answer is blocky color fields on the chest and pauldrons rather than gradients. I think that’s the right call.

Why the Busy Armor Matters

The first game handed you four nameless heroes and a darkened world. Amano gave them no clean silhouette because they weren’t meant to be one person; they were a legend the crystals called up. Keeping the patchwork colors keeps that mythic quality, even at chibi proportions. A tidier repaint would have looked like a sprite.

Articulation and Parts

The limbs, neck and cape base all move. Interchangeable hands, a sword with metallic paint, plus a “serious face” and a “side-glance face” round out the box. The cape joint is what I keep coming back to. Amano’s cover pose depends on that cape sweeping wide behind the sword arm.

How It Stacks Up

SQUARE ENIX’s own Bring Arts line has handled Amano-styled heroes with layered washes and sharper sculpt detail. Good Smile won’t match that texture at 10 cm, and it isn’t trying. The open question is the paint at retail: those tiny color blocks leave little room for slop. Production samples will tell us more.

Orders through the Good Smile Company Online Shop include a special base printed with the classic FINAL FANTASY title logo. That bonus base is honestly a good reason to pick the shop.

The Collector’s Survival Guide: How to Justify This

The Collector Math: Garland spent two thousand years in a time loop just for another shot at the Warrior of Light. I’m getting the same guy for 7,900 yen, about $52, which is under three cents per year of Garland’s effort. Compared to Garland, I’m barely even obsessed.

How to tell your wife: Hironobu Sakaguchi named it Final Fantasy because he thought it would be his last game. I’m calling this my final figure for the exact same reason. Sixteen numbered games later, the name still holds up.

How to tell your parents: You spent years telling me to color inside the lines. Yoshitaka Amano painted this hero’s armor in colors that bleed right into each other, and his work hangs in galleries. I was never messy, Mom; I was painterly.

How to tell your kids: This is the Warrior of Light, and he comes with a side-glance face so he can watch you without turning his head. You may look at him all you want, but touch his metallic sword and I switch him to the serious face. Nobody in this house wants the serious face.

Picking Amano’s messy, painterly hero over a clean in-game model is the most interesting choice Good Smile has made with this franchise in a while. If 七兵衛’s color blocks survive mass production, this is the rare Nendoroid that reads as a tribute to an artist, not just a character.
