The Zack Fair Action Figure by Square Enix brings the proud SOLDIER from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth into the PLAY ARTS SHIN series, and I’ve been grinning at the prototype photos all morning. It’s priced at $275 and expected to ship between May 2027 and July 2027. It may slip as late as October 2027, so pace your excitement accordingly.

The Zack Fair Action Figure is a 30 cm (appx. 11.81 in) articulated figure of Zack Fair from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, made by Square Enix in its PLAY ARTS SHIN series. It costs $275 and is expected to ship from May 2027 to July 2027, with a limit of 6 per person. Character design is credited to Tetsuya Nomura and Roberto Ferrari.

SHIN Is the Upgrade KAI Fans Asked For

PLAY ARTS SHIN is the step up from the older PLAY ARTS KAI line, and the headline change is in the hips. The traditional click joints are gone, replaced by a redesigned system built for smooth movement and wider dynamic poses. If you’ve ever fought a ratcheting KAI hip into a lunge and lost, you’ll know why I care about this more than any paint swatch.

A Face That Can Actually Look Somewhere

The detail I keep coming back to is the new eye-movement mechanism, which lets you shift Zack’s gaze. That matters for this character more than most, because Zack’s whole charm is that he’s always looking at someone, usually grinning while he does it. Pair that with the interchangeable battle-expression face part and you get both sides of him: the cheerful puppy and the SOLDIER First Class who means business.

Sculpt, Fabric Feel and Those Boots

The sculpt goes after Zack’s spiky black hair, his face and a well-trained build, and Square Enix separates the material textures carefully. The costume reads simple, the pants carry natural folds and the boots look sturdy and weighty. It won’t chase Hot Toys on hyper-real skin, and it doesn’t need to; this is Nomura’s stylized look rendered with real attention to surface, which is the right call for a game character.

Buster Sword, Materia and Shelf Planning

The accessory list is focused: the Buster Sword with interchangeable Materia, folded-arms arm parts and various hands. Those folded arms are my favorite piece, because that confident, slightly smug stance is pure Zack between fights. On the shelf, I’d put him next to an Aerith Gainsborough figure from the same Rebirth lineup, with the Buster Sword angled toward Cloud if you’ve got him, so the sword tells the story without a single caption.

The Collector’s Survival Guide: How to Justify This

The Collector Math: Zack Fair famously said the price of freedom is steep. Square Enix finally put a number on it: $275, and he doesn’t ship until May 2027, which gives me seven months to save. Turns out steep means about $39 a month.

How to tell your wife: You keep saying we’re not ready for a puppy. Angeal called Zack ‘puppy’ for an entire game, and this one is 11.81 inches, doesn’t shed and gives us until May 2027 to get ready. Who’s a good SOLDIER?

How to tell your parents: Mom, you always wanted me to look up to a young man with a steady job. Zack left a tiny village called Gongaga, moved to the big city and worked his way up to SOLDIER First Class. Okay, the company was evil, but the promotion was real.

How to tell your kids: This is Zack, and whenever he got restless, he dropped and did squats. That’s the official SOLDIER cure for boredom, and he’s watching from the top shelf. Say ‘I’m bored,’ and you owe Zack ten squats.

The clickless hips and movable eyes are the real story here, and they make the SHIN name feel earned rather than a relabel of KAI. If Zack’s folded-arms grin is the version of Final Fantasy VII you remember, I think he earns his 30 cm of shelf, and we’ll keep an eye on how the final production piece compares to the prototype.
